Pup Balloon got entangled in a wish balloon.
The name Balloon sounds cheerful, but it has a sad origin. In mid-June, the seal pup was found under sad circumstances: without a mother and sucking on the string of a wish balloon. She was already the fiftieth (!) entangled seal we have found this year, while the total last year was 38.
All alone
The pup was only a few days old when she was found on Vlieland by seal warden Willem Stel. He managed to remove the string from her throat immediately. Since there was no mother nearby and because the balloon might have caused harm, the seal warden decided to bring her to our center.
Balloons are not so harmless after all
It painfully demonstrates the damage that litter can cause. As beautiful and innocent as wish balloons may seem during weddings, funerals, or in this case, Father's Day, most balloons end up in nature. This can be life-threatening for seals and other animals.
How is Balloon doing now?
Fortunately, help arrived in time for Balloon. So far, she doesn't seem to have suffered any damage from the entanglement, and she is growing well. She has already had her first fish and can swim whenever she wants.
Do you wanna help?
All help for Balloon and the other pups is welcome. For instance, you can (once) doneren, een portie vis geven of een zeehond adopteren.
